From the designer:

I acquired this beauty relatively recently from an online seller and was taken by the gentle colors and fading. The surname, Haas, may have a German/Dutch origin. I will have the original antique at the sampler for you to see.

I am drawn to samplers that are a little quirky, and this one has quirkiness in spades. I myself can be a little quirky … when I was 11, I trick-or-treated not as a Disney Princess, but as Steve Martin, with an arrow through the head and rubber nose and glasses. I took a personality test one time, and it said I was “the girl next door.” As a relatively new Pennsylvanian, I also am next door to you all in Canada. I grew up just several hours from Winnipeg, and in fact honeymooned there as a newlywed the end of December of 1990. You read that right. It was even COLDER in Canada than it already was in North Dakota. I told you I was quirky!

The alphabets, especially the top one, are fun and different. The sprinkles (here and there) of a little blue are such a nice addition to the soft color palette of the antique. A border can be a little boring to stitch, so the good news is that there are FOUR different borders to enjoy, and they’re all pretty organic. I graph antiques based on the colors on the front of the sampler, as I enjoy that well-loved look. A really faded sampler means that at some point it hung on someone’s wall for quite a while. This means, just like the original, some threads will be nearly the same color as the fabric. I love the look of that — all ghostly/spooky!

This sampler has such a light and airy feeling. A newspaper editor I once worked for would have commended her use of “creative white space,” especially near the bottom. The little motifs at the bottom would make lovely scissors fobs, pin pillows, sachets, or ornaments. Let’s celebrate this sweet girl’s efforts by stitching and enjoying the fruit of her labor.

Test a small sample if you intend to wash, esp darker colours. It has been rinsed and set carefully and should be colourfast - but always better safe than sorry.
