Modern Folk Embroidery - S.P.I.C.E.S.: Six Quaker Values - Booklet Chart IH

Earlier this year, I hosted the "Quick Quaker SAL", where each day I recorded a video and stitched a little on the stitch-a-long pattern for April. A lovely YouTube commenter asked if I knew about the Quaker "SPICES" - the six core values of Quakerism.

I was recently reminded of the core values again, and it inspired me to create this design. I really love these core values, and they are applicable no matter what your faith might - or might not - be. SPICES is an acronym that has been used since the late 20th century. On the Friends Journal website (www.friendsjournal.org/s-p-i-c-e-s- quaker-testimonies) you may find more details on what each of these values stands for. Because some Quakers are not too keen on the word "stewardship" (as it has connotations of hierarchical structures), some communities prefer to replace it with "service". On page 7 of this booklet, I charted "service", along with a little basket of flowers to fill the empty space.
