This Frisian sampler is a beautifully chaotic mess, and I couldn’t love her more for it! Currently owned by Laura Duet (who kindly gave her blessing for me to reproduce her), it does not tell us who stitched it or when she worked her sampler. It only shows us two alphabets and a series of scattered sampler motifs on a long, rectangular piece of linen.
There is such a naïve simplicity to this gathering of motifs and alphabets that it fills my heart with joy when I see it. It was probably never intended to be a finished picture but instead was meant to be folded or rolled up and kept in a sewing basket, only to be brought out when motifs or letters were needed on other textile items. The original was worked on very uneven linen, and elements were randomly scattered. The chart I created closely approximates the original sampler, but liberties had to be taken to chart it.
I’m thrilled to be able to bring this design to you now and that the profits of this design will be used to help people in London, Ontario, during a period in their lives when they can use a little extra support. This chart measures 216 stitches wide and 76 stitches tall for a total of 3,931 stitches.

When stitching on 28ct or 32ct, you will need a wide quarter to stitch this chart.
When stitching on 36ct or 40ct, you will need a wide eighth to stitch this chart.
Overdyed by hand in small batches, this floss is awesome! Please ensure you are ordering the amount needed as duplicating dye lots is a tricky business and the next batch of this colourway may vary slightly.
Test a small sample if you intend to wash, esp darker colours. It has been rinsed and set carefully and should be colourfast - but always better safe than sorry.
