Modern Folk Embroidery - Lammegien Pot 1852 - Booklet Chart and/or Roxy Floss

The sampler in this booklet could in no way be considered refined. It’s not worked with fine silks, wasn’t stitched with a delicately open hem - and the stitches aren’t particularly neat on the back. But the first time I saw this sampler, something moved me. I’m glad I purchased it as I discovered it was worked by a girl from the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands named Lammegien Pot.

Drenthe is famous for its beautiful peatlands and its many megalithic tombs. Unlike her neighbouring provinces (Friesland and Groningen, to the north), Drenthe is not renowned for its samplers. This is strange, as Drenthe had affluent farming families like the other two provinces. Girls from these families undoubtedly worked samplers. These samplers may be known but might be confused with samplers from different regions. Lammegien’s sampler is the only one in my collection I know was made in Drenthe, which makes this little sampler rather unique for me.
