If you are stitching this design on 28 and 32ct linen, you will need a wide quarter.
If you are stitching this design on 36ct linen, you can fit this on a wide eighth, but you will only have a 2.25 inche border on the short side of the fabric.
If you are stitching this design on 40 or 46ct linen, you will need a wide eighth.
From the Designer:
When I first saw this sampler at an auction in Utrecht, I hadn’t thought I would be able to find out who had worked this sampler. The only clues were (what I assumed to be) some initials and the year 1851. Then I realised that the 5 letters might belong to the same person, as after these, the stitcher wrote: “oud 9 jaar” (aged 9 years).
So, I tried several things on Dutch ancestry websites. The first clue was the letters “VD”, which, in Dutch names, could stand for “van de(r)” (meaning “from the” - a common part of a surname). After doing some research, I found only one girl who could have stitched this sampler: Annetje van de Vuurst Schoenmaker.
